Twinkling stars surround our game board as we make our way through deep space, sent into super hyperspeed when we land the randomly-triggered Second Chance feature.

As we blast Gem clusters, their stardust floats up from the game board to their relevant Gem meters above the reels. Every Gem we blast contributes to the relevant Gem meter above the reels, awarding that prize when we fill up the meter with seven gems blasted. Glistening Nebula Stones also shimmer their way onto the reels, enticing us to collect them. We do so when we find three or more in a cluster, collecting their rewards when we level up.

Blasting a cluster of colourful Jackpot symbols awards an instant x1,000 payout - the real aim for this space age mission.

Gameplay

The strapline that runs underneath the game’s title when we load up Gems Odyssey proclaims “Find Gem clusters and fill Gem bars”. This is, in a nutshell, exactly what we must do in order to progress through the game. We can fill each Gem’s meter numerous times per game round, with each running tally displayed inside the Gems.

We can opt to play either manually - selecting the Gem clusters we want to blast ourselves - or we can opt to play in AI mode and let the on-baord computer do the blasting for us as we put our feet up. The Level-Up meter in the top right of our screens displays how far along each level we have progressed.

When we level up, we collect the prizes from the Nebula Stones that we have blasted along our way, awarding cash prizes for our bravery and skill. But these aren’t the only prizes to which we can look forward.

Verdict

With its easy gameplay and quickfire rounds, Skillz Gaming’s Gems Odyssey is a match-three game that is sure to find its way onto many a desktop and mobile screen.

The studio’s relationship with Microgaming has born serious fruit, not least in its Fruit Blast match-three game which runs on similar principles as these. While the Jackpot symbols are the most elusive in this space mission - and perhaps rightly so with their attached x1,000 payout - we collect the Nebula Stones readily enough to keep us on the hunt for our next level up as we reach for the stars.
