So how exactly can cyberpunk and feudal Japan be combined? Well, it’s not a case of a ‘lost in time’ premise, but more of a ‘borrowing from time’ idea. For instance, the backdrop of this slot is set against a purple transporter room. Bang in the middle we see the glowing blue pixels which no doubt we could step through and travel back in time. But we’re not going to do that.

Instead, the reels and symbols cover this up and the ancient Japanese themes come in to play. Symbols include a Samurai Helmet, Flowers, Coins, Fans and the traditional card values, Ten to Ace. All of the symbols appear in primary colours while the room remains sparkling violet. In the background we can make out a city landscape – are we now in future Tokyo?

We’re not too sure. And who is the Woman with the earpiece that acts as the Wild? We’re not sure either, but we don’t have to know. Or care. She could be the time traveller exploring her past? She could be our Chloe O’ Brian equivalent like in 24 and she’s helping us navigate the past? Either way, it doesn’t matter because we can get lost in the amazing visuals and fun gameplay of Shogun of Time.

Gameplay

Shogun of Time keeps everything smartly compartmentalized. Just like in JFTW’s other slots like Deco Diamonds, the spin button, autospin, betting range and information buttons are all kept neatly on the right side of the screen.

They match the theme and colour of the slot but don’t intrude on the actual gameplay. While this starts out as a four reel slot with 81 paylines, when we land four of a kind, the Reel Split Re-spin feature triggers. All of a sudden the reels lock in place, a fifth reel appears in the middle and we can then play for the Free Spins when the Scatter symbol appears.

But what’s more interesting is that now, as well as five reels, we bag 243 Ways to Win! And to top it off, the middle reel becomes a fully stacked Wild. It’s an odd combination of features but, then again, so is time travel and shoguns. But when we see it together, it works just fine.

Verdict

Despite all its nuances, Shogun of Time is actually a super simple slot to play. The Re-spins and Free Spins features seem to merge into one but we’re too mesmerised by the entrancing graphics to fully take notice.

We do, however, take notice of the fact we can win up to 2,478 times our stake. Kerching!
